Adaptive/Therapeutic Horsemanship

Our Adaptive/Therapeutic Horsemanship program makes horseback riding accessible, safe, and rewarding for individuals of all abilities. By combining professional instruction, trained volunteers, and specially selected horses, we create inclusive opportunities for learning, recreation, and personal growth.

What We Offer

Participants learn horsemanship through mounted riding lessons and, when weather or footing requires, through groundwork and horse care. Lessons are adapted to each rider’s abilities and goals, with a focus on building confidence, independence, and new skills.

We accommodate a wide range of needs by offering:

  • Mounting from a block or ramp
  • Varying levels of volunteer support, including horse leaders and side walkers
  • Different saddle types, including English (our preferred), Western, and bareback options

Who We Serve

Our program welcomes riders with a variety of diagnoses and challenges, including but not limited to:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

We also serve individuals with other physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Each lesson is tailored to the unique abilities and goals of the participant.

Benefits of Adaptive/Therapeutic Horsemanship

Engaging with horses provides participants with:

  • Increased muscle strength and coordination
  • Greater confidence and independence
  • Recreational and social opportunities
  • A fun and motivating way to learn

Lesson Structure, Eligibility & Tuition

Our program operates in Spring, Summer, and Fall six-week sessions, each consisting of weekly 30-minute group riding lessons. A typical lesson includes:

  • Mounting the horse
  • Warm-up exercises
  • Learning and practicing a riding skill
  • Reinforcing skills through games and activities
  • Cool down and dismount

Eligibility: Riders ages 4 and older are welcome. For the safety of our horses, as well as the safety of instructors and volunteers who may assist with mounts, dismounts, or emergency procedures, there is a 200-pound weight limit.

Tuition: $150 per 6-week session
Scholarships are available to help ensure all riders have the opportunity to participate.

Safety and Support

All lessons are taught by instructors certified through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH Intl.). Volunteers receive specialized training to provide safe and effective support for our riders.

Our center is equipped with a mounting block and ramp to accommodate many riders, and our horses are carefully selected and trained for their gentleness and reliability.
